Make background white: put any photo on pure white

What this page does

It starts from your photo as it is. The subject stays where it was in the frame, nothing is trimmed or squared unless you ask for it under Crop & size, and only the background changes to white. That makes it a quick way to clean up a picture you like but whose surroundings you don't: a cluttered desk behind a product, a kitchen behind a portrait, a patterned rug under a pair of shoes.

Where a white background helps

• Product photos. Amazon wants main images on pure white, where red, green and blue are each 255, the exact white this page uses. Plenty of other marketplaces want plain white behind the main photo too.
• Pictures on a white page. A headshot, a product or a dish on white merges with a white document, newsletter or price list, so the picture's edge disappears and only the subject shows, without needing a transparent file.
• Printing. On white paper, a white background needs no ink at all, so the subject seems to sit on the page. A dark room behind a portrait, by contrast, prints as a heavy block of ink.
• Consistent sets. Photos taken in different places, like a row of products shot on different tables, look like they belong together once they share one background.

Getting clean edges on white

White is forgiving of pale leftovers, but anything darker than the white shows. A cutout from a photo taken against a dark wall can keep a thin gray line along the outline, most often in hair, fur and the gaps between fingers. Check for it before you download:

• Sweep the before/after slider across the edges, pausing wherever the subject's color was close to the old background's.
• Erase traces with a small brush and low softness on hard edges, such as a product's outline.
• Treat hair gently. Raise the softness, so wisps fade out instead of ending in a cut line, and restore any strand the AI dropped.
• Look at the ground. A shadow on the floor usually goes with the old background, but a dark contact shadow right under the feet or the base of a product can be kept as part of the subject. Erase it for pure white all the way to the edge.

A pale subject needs a different kind of care. White sneakers, a white shirt or light blond hair aren't removed, because the AI picks out the subject rather than a color, but their outline can fade into the white. If the edge matters, set the background to a very light gray with the color picker; for the next shoot, a darker backdrop gives the AI a cleaner edge to follow.

JPG, PNG or WebP

JPG comes selected. With white all around the subject there's nothing see-through to preserve, and a JPG keeps the file compact for upload forms, listings and email.

PNG is lossless, and that matters in one case: JPG compression can leave faint off-white noise right next to the subject's edges. If a marketplace or a client checks that the background is exactly 255, 255, 255 all the way to the outline, a PNG keeps every white pixel exactly white. It's also the better choice for a picture you'll keep editing.

WebP gives a compact file for a website.
