Drop a PNG into the box above and it comes back as an EPS file. The picture is traced into shapes, each shape keeps its color, and the drawing is scaled to the width you type, in millimeters or inches. Curves are stored as curves, so the result stays sharp however large you print or place it. There is no signup or watermark.
A real vector EPS
EPS (Encapsulated PostScript) is a PostScript drawing saved as a single file that other programs can place on a page. An EPS can carry vector shapes, a bitmap, or both. This converter writes only vector shapes: every area of color in your picture becomes a filled outline with its own Bézier curves, the same shapes the PNG to SVG converter draws. If the artwork is already an SVG, SVG to EPS keeps its exact shapes and strokes without tracing.
That is the difference that matters for print and design work. A bitmap inside an EPS wrapper is still made of pixels and blurs when it is enlarged; traced shapes can be scaled to a sticker, a sign or a T-shirt and stay crisp, and a designer can recolor or edit them like any other vector artwork.
EPS vs SVG
Both are vector formats, and this page makes both from the same trace. They come from different worlds:
| EPS | SVG | |
|---|---|---|
| What it is | A PostScript drawing for placing on a page, from Adobe and Aldus (1987) | An XML drawing format, a W3C standard (SVG 1.1, 2003) |
| What it can hold | Vector shapes, a bitmap, or both | Vector shapes, bitmaps and text |
| Web browsers | Not among the image formats web pages use | Shown by browsers like any image |
| Typical use | Print, sign making, Illustrator and layout workflows that ask for EPS | Websites, icons, cutting machines and design apps |
Choose Download SVG for a website, an app or a Cricut, and Download EPS when a print shop or publisher asks for EPS. The Library of Congress notes that in many contexts EPS has been superseded by PDF.
Which images convert well
- Logos and icons on a plain or transparent background convert cleanly, color by color.
- Line art, text and signatures trace well in Black & white.
- Silhouettes and shapes make a tidy one-color EPS.
Photos can be traced too, but they come out like a poster: soft gradients become flat areas of color, and fine detail turns into many small shapes. To keep just a person, pet or product from a photo, remove the background first and trace the transparent PNG.
Color, black and white, or one color
- Color traces each color as its own shapes, stacked like sheets of paper with each lower one running under the ones above. Under More settings you can limit the number of colors for a simpler drawing.
- Black & white traces only the dark parts, the classic way to vectorize line art, text and scanned drawings. Even out uneven lighting helps with photos of paper that are brighter on one side.
- One color fills every visible part of the picture in a single color, useful for stamps, single-color printing and anything that is cut out along one outline.
Remove the background color, on when the picture sits on one plain color, clears that color from the edges inward before tracing. The EPS then holds only the design, and the areas around it stay empty instead of becoming a white rectangle.
Width and units
Type the width the drawing should have and choose millimeters or inches; the height follows the picture's proportions and shows under the field. The EPS records that size in its bounding box, so a layout program places it at exactly that size, and switching units keeps the same physical size. Because the shapes are vectors, you can still scale the drawing freely afterwards.
What's inside the EPS
- An EPS in the standard layout, EPSF-3.0, with the bounding box comment that programs read to place it.
- PostScript level 2 drawing commands only: filled shapes, their curves and RGB colors.
- Curves kept as cubic Bézier curves, not chains of straight lines.
- No fonts, no embedded bitmap and no preview picture.
The Simple level smooths small wiggles and drops specks, Balanced suits most logos, and Detailed keeps small features. Under More settings, Sharp corners keeps straight edges and corners for geometric logos, and Ignore specks smaller than removes dust and noise that would otherwise become tiny shapes.
PNG to AI
Illustrator's own format is AI. To turn a PNG into an AI file, download the EPS here, open it in Adobe Illustrator with File > Open, and save it as Adobe Illustrator (.ai). Adobe lists Encapsulated PostScript among the formats Illustrator opens and Adobe Illustrator among the formats it saves. Illustrator opens SVG files too, so the SVG download works the same way.
Using the EPS
- Adobe Illustrator lists Encapsulated PostScript among the formats it opens and places.
- Inkscape imports EPS and PostScript files when Ghostscript is installed on the computer.
- Page layout and print. Place the EPS in a layout or send it to a printer that asks for vector artwork; its size is the width you chose.
- Cutting machines. Cricut Design Space uploads SVG and DXF files, not EPS, so use Download SVG here or the PNG to DXF converter for cutting and laser work.
Because the file has no preview picture, a program that can't read PostScript shows an empty box where the EPS is placed. It still prints correctly, and the SVG download is there for programs that prefer it. Every result is made from the same trace as the SVG, so Download SVG gives you the matching vector file for the web and for design apps.
Frequently asked questions
Is an EPS a vector file?
It can be, and the one made here is. An EPS is a PostScript drawing that can hold vector shapes, a bitmap or both: the Library of Congress describes the format as suited to vector graphics and to drawings that mix vectors with raster data, and notes it has also been used to wrap plain bitmaps. This converter writes only traced shapes, filled outlines with their curves and colors and no embedded bitmap, so the EPS scales to any size without blurring and its shapes can be edited in a vector editor.
EPS or SVG: which should I use?
SVG for anything on screen and for cutting machines, EPS when a printer, sign maker or publisher asks for it. Web browsers show SVG files, and Cricut Design Space uploads SVG but not EPS. Both downloads here come from the same trace, so their shapes are identical.
Can I convert JPG to EPS too?
Yes. JPG, WebP, GIF and HEIC images trace the same way as PNG files. Logos, icons, drawings and text convert best; photos come out like a poster with flat areas of color.
How do I get an AI file from a PNG?
Convert the PNG to EPS here, open the EPS in Adobe Illustrator and save it as Adobe Illustrator (.ai). Adobe lists Encapsulated PostScript among the formats Illustrator opens and AI among the formats it saves.
Does the EPS keep a transparent background?
An EPS paints only its shapes, so whatever has no shape stays empty and shows what is behind it. Turn on Remove the background color for a logo on white, or start from a PNG with a transparent background, and the EPS has no box around the design.
Which programs open the EPS?
Adobe Illustrator opens EPS files, and Inkscape imports them when Ghostscript is installed. The file has no preview picture inside, so a program that can't read PostScript shows an empty box where the drawing is placed, though it still prints correctly.
Are my images uploaded?
No. The image is traced inside your browser tab, so it never leaves your device, and the tool is free with no signup or watermark.
