How to pixelate part of an image

  1. Drop a photo or screenshot into the box above, or choose it from your device.
  2. Drag across each face, number plate or line of text you want to hide.
  3. Choose Pixelate, Blur or Solid box, and raise the Strength if details still show.
  4. Select Download to save the picture.

Drop a photo or screenshot into the box above and drag across whatever should not be seen: a face, a number plate, a name tag, a house number, an email address. Each part you select is pixelated, blurred or covered as you let go, and the rest of the picture stays exactly as it was. Download it when everything is hidden. There's no signup or watermark.

Pixelate, blur or solid box?

Effect What it looks like Best for
Pixelate Large squares of color Faces and number plates in photos, the familiar TV look
Blur A soft, smeared patch Faces and backgrounds where squares would stand out
Solid box A black box Passwords, card and account numbers, addresses and anything that must stay secret

Pixelating and blurring hide details by mixing nearby colors, which is enough for faces and plates. Text is different: Depix, a published research tool, recovers text from pixelated screenshots. When the words themselves must stay secret, use Solid box, which replaces them with plain black.

Hiding things well

Each part you drag becomes its own box, so several faces or lines of text take several drags. Undo removes the last one and Clear all starts over.

What the saved picture keeps

The download is made from the changed pixels, so nothing underneath a pixelated, blurred or covered part can be recovered from the file. The saved picture also carries none of the original photo's camera details, date or GPS location, which phones often store in JPG photos. A JPG is saved as a JPG, and a PNG screenshot stays a PNG, so the parts you didn't hide keep their quality.

Pixelating the whole picture

Choose Whole picture to turn the entire image into squares, from a light mosaic at a low Strength to a few large blocks at a high one. Blur does the same with a soft blur. To keep a person sharp and blur only what is behind them, the background blur tool finds the subject for you.

Frequently asked questions

How do I blur a face in a photo?

Open the photo, choose Blur, and drag a box across the face, a little wider than the head. Raise the Strength until the face can't be recognized, then download. Drag across each face that needs hiding.

Can pixelated text be read again?

Sometimes. A published research tool, Depix, recovers text from pixelated screenshots. For passwords, card and account numbers and anything else that must stay secret, use Solid box, which leaves nothing of the text behind.

Does the downloaded picture still contain the hidden parts?

No. The saved picture is made from the changed pixels only, so there is nothing underneath to reveal. It also leaves out the original photo's camera details, date and location.

Can I pixelate the whole picture?

Yes. Choose Whole picture under Apply to. A low Strength keeps it recognizable, like pixel art; a high Strength turns it into a few large blocks.

Does it work on screenshots?

Yes. Screenshots from a phone or computer open like photos, and PNG screenshots are saved as PNG, so text you didn't hide stays sharp.

Are my photos uploaded?

No. The picture is changed inside your browser, so it never leaves your device, and there's no signup or watermark.
