Why HEIC photos need converting
An iPhone saves photos as HEIC files, which take less space than JPEGs but that many programs, websites and upload forms still can't open. A PDF opens anywhere, which makes it the easy way to send a set of photos as one file: receipts for an expense report, pages of a document, or pictures for a form that only takes PDFs. Page size and margins
- A4 and Letter are the paper sizes for printing: A4 in most of the world, Letter in the US and Canada. Each page turns to landscape for a wide photo, and the photo fills the page inside the margin.
- Fit to picture makes each page the size of its photo, which suits PDFs read on a screen.
- Margin adds a white border of a quarter or half an inch for printing.
Quality and file size
Each HEIC photo is drawn upright and saved in the PDF as a high-quality JPEG image, the picture format PDF files use for photos. JPG pictures added to the same PDF go in without being compressed again, as JPG to PDF explains. iPhone photos are large, so a PDF of many photos gets big: Smaller file reduces every photo to 2,000 pixels on its longest side and compresses it more, which is usually small enough for email and upload forms.
Putting the pages in order
Photos are sorted by file name, so IMG_0001 comes before IMG_0002, and photos you add later go at the end. The buttons beside each page move it earlier or later or remove it, and the PDF is remade straight away.
What stays private
iPhone photos can carry the camera details, the date and, with Location Services on, the place they were taken. None of that goes into the PDF. To hide a face, a number plate or an address in a photo before sharing it, use pixelate image first.

What is a HEIC file?
It's how an iPhone saves photos: HEIF, a format from the Moving Picture Experts Group, with HEVC compression. Apple switched to it with iOS 11 in 2017 because it takes less space than JPEG for the same look, but many programs still can't open it.
Can I convert HEIC to PDF on my iPhone?
