Make a GIF with a transparent background
A GIF can only be transparent where its frames are. Start from images whose background is already see-through, such as PNG stickers, emotes, icons or cutouts, and keep Space around fitted images on Transparent.

GIF transparency is all or nothing: each pixel is either fully see-through or fully solid. Pixels that are at least half opaque stay visible and the rest disappear, so soft edges like hair or glow come out crisp. For the cleanest result, use frames with sharp edges or make the GIF on the color it will be shown on.
Order, speed and looping
- Order. Each batch you add is sorted by file name, so frame-1.png to frame-10.png play in that order. Use the arrows on each frame to move it, the cross to remove it, or Reverse order to flip the animation.
- Speed. Seconds per frame sets how long each image stays on screen, from 0.02 to 10 seconds. A value around 0.1 gives smooth motion; 0.5 to 2 seconds suits a slideshow.
- Looping. Loop forever repeats the animation endlessly, the usual choice for stickers and reactions. Untick it and the GIF plays once and stops on the last frame.
Size and file size
The Size menu makes the GIF 240 to 800 pixels wide. The first image sets the shape, and a small first image is never enlarged. Smaller GIFs are quicker to make, send and load.
File size depends mostly on the content. Flat graphics with few colors compress well. Photos don't: GIF holds at most 256 colors per frame, so each frame is dithered with fine dots, and those dots compress poorly. For a photo slideshow, fewer frames and a smaller size keep the file manageable. A GIF can hold up to 60 frames here, with up to 20 megapixels across all of them, for example 60 frames of 480 × 480 pixels.
Images of different shapes
The first image decides the shape of the GIF. Images with other proportions are handled in one of two ways:
- Fit the whole image shrinks each one to fit inside the frame, with transparent, white or black space around it.
- Fill the frame and crop scales each one to cover the whole frame, cutting off whatever sticks out at the sides or at the top and bottom.
