Which GIFs it works on
This tool removes a background color, frame by frame. That suits most GIFs made as graphics:
- Stickers, emotes and reactions drawn on a plain white, black or colored background.
- Animated logos and icons exported on a solid color.
- Pixel art and cartoons with a flat backdrop.
- Screen recordings of an element moving on a plain background.
It does not work on filmed footage, such as a clip from a movie or a phone video turned into a GIF. There the background is a real scene with many colors, and separating a person from it needs a cutout of every frame. For still photos, the AI background remover finds the subject instead of a color.
How the background color is found
When the GIF opens, the tool looks at the pixels along the edges of the first frame and takes the most common color as the background. The swatch shows the color it chose. If it picked the wrong one, for example because the subject touches the edge, select Pick from the GIF and click the background in the preview.
Tolerance decides how close a color has to be to the background to count as background. GIFs often have slight shade variations, dithering or compression noise around the subject, so a small tolerance usually works best. Raise it a step at a time if a rim or speckles of background remain; lower it if parts of the subject start to vanish.
Only the background that touches the edges
With Only remove background that touches the edges on, the tool clears background-colored pixels only where they connect to the edge of the frame, the way a paint bucket fills from outside in. A cartoon face on white keeps the white of its eyes and teeth, because those areas are enclosed by the outline.
Turn it off to remove the background color everywhere, including gaps enclosed by the subject, such as the inside of a letter O or the space between an arm and a body. The preview updates as soon as you change a setting.
Why GIF edges look sharp
A GIF stores transparency as on or off: each pixel is either fully see-through or fully solid. There are no partly transparent pixels, so the soft, blended edge of a drawing ends up either kept or removed. On a GIF made on white, the kept edge pixels can form a faint light rim when you place the result on a dark background. Raise the tolerance slightly to trim it, or make the GIF on a background close to where it will be shown.

Timing, loops and file size
Every frame keeps its display time, so the animation runs at the original speed, and the loop setting is copied as it was. The new GIF stores each frame whole with its own colors, which keeps the result simple and reliable; its file size can end up larger or smaller than the original, and the tool shows the size after saving.
Limits keep the tool fast on phones and laptops: files up to 25 MB, and up to 20 megapixels across all frames. For a long or large GIF, trim frames or reduce its size in an editor first. To edit frames one at a time in another app, the GIF to PNG converter saves every frame as a separate PNG.
