A black background comes in two very different kinds, and this tool handles both. A product, a person or a pet photographed against black needs a cutout: the subject stays solid and the black goes. Fire, smoke, sparks, lightning, neon and other light effects on black need something else, because they have no hard edge at all. Their glow simply fades into the darkness, and the right result keeps that fade as transparency.
Solid subjects on black
The black preset starts with an AI cutout, which finds the subject by its shape, plus removal of near-black color, which clears whatever black the cutout keeps, such as the gap between an arm and a body. This works for product shots on black velvet, portraits on a dark studio backdrop and clipart exported on black.
Black removal works by color, so it cannot tell the backdrop from black parts of the subject. Black hair, a black jacket or deep shadows can go too. When that happens, lower Tolerance, untick Also remove black inside the subject so only the AI decides, or paint the missing area back with the restore brush.
Keep glows for fire, smoke and neon
Light effects are brighter than the black around them, and their brightness fades gradually. A color-based removal keeps every pixel that is a little brighter than black, so the dim outer glow survives as a dark ring. That ring shows as soon as you place the effect on anything lighter than black.
Tick Keep glows under Cutout to handle these images. Each pixel's brightest color channel becomes its opacity: pure black turns fully transparent, bright cores stay solid, and the soft glow in between becomes partly transparent. The colors in those partly transparent pixels are brightened back to full strength, so the glow looks the same over black and keeps its hue over any other background. The AI cutout switches off while Keep glows is on, because a glow has no outline for it to find.
Tolerance sets the darkest level that still counts as black. Raise it to clear grainy noise or a background that is not quite black; lower it to keep the faintest wisps of smoke. Try the Neon sample to see the difference: switch Keep glows on and off, and compare the edges on a white background.
Logos, screenshots and graphics on black
Text and shapes on flat black clear in one pass, because every background pixel has the same color. Anti-aliased edges, the soft pixels along curves, can leave a thin dark rim. Raise the tolerance a step at a time until the rim disappears, and stop before the edges of the letters start to thin. Check the result on a light background
A cutout that looks perfect on black can hide a dark fringe. Open Check edges in the Cutout panel and switch the view to white: any leftover black shows up at once, and the view does not change your download. The checkerboard behind the result only marks transparency; it is not saved into the file. Save as PNG or WebP to keep the transparent areas, since JPG has no transparency, and what a transparent background is explains the formats.
