How the AI decides what to keep

The model looks for the main subject, the thing that stands out in the foreground, and treats the rest as background. In a busy scene it can keep a little too much or too little: a chair leg beside a person, the plate under a sandwich, a second dog in the corner.

Photo tips for each kind of subject

People

Face a window or lamp rather than standing with the light behind you, because backlight turns the outline of your hair into a glow the AI has to guess at. Loose hair comes out soft and partly see-through, so tie it back if you need a crisp edge.

Products

Set the item on a plain surface in a color it doesn't share, such as white sneakers on dark card or a black phone case on light paper. Many marketplaces want the main photo on plain white, and Amazon insists on pure white for main images, with red, green and blue all at 255, so place the cutout on white and save a JPG. Pets

Fur separates most cleanly when the coat and the background are different colors: a black cat on a pale blanket, a golden dog on dark grass. Shoot at the pet's eye level in bright light, so the photo stays sharp even if they move, and look closely at whiskers and fluffy ear tips before you download.

Cars

Step back until the whole car fits with space around it. Windows are the tricky part: glass is see-through, so the scene behind it may stay visible or be cleared with the background. Use the eraser to clear a window, or the restore brush to bring back the original view through it.

Food

The plate or bowl may be kept as part of the dish, so erase it if you only want the food. Steam and drinks in clear glasses are among the hardest things to cut out, and a shot from directly above, on a plain tray, keeps the outline simple.

Everyday objects

Shoes, mugs, toys and tools are easy to set up: put them on paper that contrasts with them and shoot from slightly above. After the cutout, trim to the subject and add padding so the object sits centered. A logo is different, since it's a flat graphic rather than a photo; the logo background remover clears the background color first.

Give the subject a new background

Once the background is gone, leave it transparent or choose what goes behind the subject:

• White or black for a clean catalog look.
• Any color, like your brand color.
• A blur of the original scene, which keeps the setting but softens it so the subject stands out.
• Your own image, to put the subject in a different scene.
