Drop a WebP into the box above and it comes back as an SVG made of real vector shapes, traced in your browser. Logos, icons, stickers and clip art saved from websites often arrive as WebP, because many sites now serve their images in that format. A WebP is fine on screen, but it is still pixels: it blurs when you enlarge it, and cutting machines, sign makers and vector apps need outlines. Tracing gives you those outlines.
What lossy WebP does to a logo, and how tracing undoes it
Many WebP files on the web are lossy. The encoder works on small blocks of the picture and discards some detail in each, spending fewer bits on simpler areas, which is how WebP files stay small. On a photo it rarely shows. On a logo, the crisp edge between two flat colors picks up faint halos and a scatter of in-between shades.
You can measure it. Our sample logo has 892 distinct colors as a PNG, almost all of them the soft rims of its shapes and letters. Saved as a WebP at quality 80, the same logo has 6,080 distinct colors. The extra shades sit along the edges, where they would otherwise turn into slivers of extra shapes.
The tracer handles that before it draws anything:
- It groups similar shades into flat colors. In logos and other graphics on a plain or transparent background, fills a few shades apart are merged into one, so a flat area comes out as one color instead of dozens of near-identical shades.
- It cuts each edge at the halfway point of the blend into the background, so the halo around a letter becomes a clean outline instead of a pale ring.
- Shades almost exactly the background color become the background color, so Remove the background color clears all of them.
Simple goes further and is the right start for a lossy logo. Load the Logo WebP sample above to see it:
| Traced from | Detail | Result |
|---|---|---|
| The sample logo as a lossy WebP | Balanced | 11 colors, 43 shapes |
| The sample logo as a lossy WebP | Simple | 5 colors, 11 shapes |
| The original PNG of the same logo | Balanced | 5 colors, 13 shapes |
If you also have the logo as a PNG or SVG, start from that: a lossless file has no compression shades to clean up.
Logos and stickers trace best; photos are a different job
Tracing turns areas of similar color into flat shapes. That suits:
- Logos, icons and badges saved from a website or a social profile.
- Stickers and clip art, including transparent WebP stickers.
- Line art, text and signatures, best with Black & white.
Photos can be traced, but they come out posterized, like a screen print, and the file grows large. If you only need a WebP photo in a more widely accepted format, the WebP to PNG converter keeps every pixel. Keep the pixels for anything with soft gradients, skin, sky or fine texture.
Transparent and animated WebP
A WebP can be transparent, and its empty areas stay empty in the SVG: no shapes are drawn there. The sample WebP cutout above is a transparent WebP photo.
A WebP can also be animated. The tracer draws one picture, so it uses the first frame. To keep the motion, the WebP to GIF converter turns an animated WebP into an animated GIF.
Settings, cutting machines and file size
The styles and detail levels work exactly as on the PNG to SVG converter, which explains each one in full:
- Color keeps the colors.
- Black & white keeps the dark parts.
- One color makes one silhouette for vinyl, stencils and laser engraving.
- Simple makes the smallest files, the right start for most WebP logos.
Cricut Design Space refuses SVGs over 5,000 paths, and the tool warns you when a trace goes over.
To turn the SVG back into a picture at any size, the SVG to PNG converter draws it crisply at the width you choose. For laser and CNC software, PNG to DXF traces the same way and saves a DXF drawing.
Nothing is uploaded: the WebP is decoded and traced in your browser, and there is no signup or watermark.
Frequently asked questions
Isn't a WebP already a vector image?
No. WebP stores pixels, like PNG and JPG, so an enlarged WebP turns blurry or blocky. An SVG traced from it describes shapes instead, so it stays sharp at any size and cutting machines and design apps can use its outlines.
Why does my WebP logo look blotchy up close, and does that carry into the SVG?
Many WebP images on websites use lossy compression, which smears colors at sharp edges and adds faint in-between shades. Tracing groups those shades into flat colors and cuts each edge at the blend. For a lossy logo, choose Simple: our sample traced into 11 colors and 43 shapes at Balanced, and into 5 colors and 11 shapes at Simple, the same 5 colors as the original PNG.
Does the SVG keep my WebP's transparent background?
Yes. Transparent areas of a WebP have no shapes in the SVG. For a logo on a plain white or colored background, Remove the background color clears that color first.
What happens with an animated WebP?
The first frame is traced into the SVG. To keep the animation, convert it with the WebP to GIF converter instead.
Can I convert a WebP photo to SVG?
You can, but a traced photo comes out like a screen print, with flat patches of color and a large file. For a photo you just need in another format, the WebP to PNG converter keeps every pixel.
Will the SVG work with Cricut?
Yes. Cricut Design Space uploads SVG files as cut-ready vector images and refuses SVGs with more than 5,000 paths, so use One color, the Simple level or fewer colors for busy images.
