Drop a WebM file above, choose the part you want, and download it as an animated GIF. The frames are read and the GIF is made in your browser, so the video never leaves your device, and there is no signup or watermark.
What a WebM file is
WebM is an open, royalty-free media format designed for the web. Its video is compressed with the VP8 or VP9 codecs and its audio with Vorbis or Opus, in a container based on Matroska (the WebM Project). Every current browser plays it, which is why it's common for clips saved from the web and for recordings made in a browser.
Some WebM recordings don't store their own length, so players show no duration until they reach the end. In Chrome the converter measures the length when the file opens, so the start and length you choose land where you expect; some other browsers read only the start of such a file, so if the length shown looks too short, use Chrome.
WebM or GIF?
A WebM is a real video: smooth, with sound, and usually far smaller than a GIF of the same clip. A GIF is an animated image: no sound and at most 256 colors, but it plays wherever an image can, from chat apps and slides to email and programs that can't play video. Keep both, and use the GIF where video doesn't work.
Settings that matter
- Frames per second: 10 suits most clips; 15 or 20 for fast movement, at a larger file size. GIF stores frame times in hundredths of a second, so 15 plays at about 14.3.
- Width: 240 to 640 pixels; a smaller video is never enlarged. Halving the width leaves about a quarter of the pixels.
- Quality: Balanced (128 colors, tiny flickers ignored) suits most clips; Smallest file uses 64 colors; Best quality keeps up to 256.
For an MP4 or MOV, the same converter works: see video to GIF. To shrink a GIF you already have, use the GIF compressor; for an animated WebP image rather than a video, the WebP to GIF converter.
Frequently asked questions
How do I convert a WebM to a GIF?
Drop the WebM above, choose the start, the length (up to 10 seconds), the frame rate and the width, and select Make GIF. The GIF appears under the video; select Download GIF to save it. Nothing is uploaded.
Why would I turn a WebM into a GIF?
A GIF plays wherever an image can: in chat apps, documents, emails and older programs that can't play video. A WebM is usually much smaller for the same clip, so keep the WebM where video works.
My WebM recording shows no length. Will it work?
In Chrome, yes. Recordings made in a browser sometimes don't store their length; the converter has Chrome measure it when the file opens, so you can choose any part. Some other browsers read only the start of such a file, so if the length shown looks too short, open the WebM in Chrome.
Does the GIF keep the sound?
No. GIFs are pictures only, so the audio is left out. Keep the WebM where you need the sound.
How big will the GIF be?
It depends on the size, length and movement. Each frame stores only what changed from the one before, so screen recordings stay small; for anything else, a smaller width or fewer frames a second shrinks the file most. The size is shown before you download.
