Drop a video above, choose the part you want, and get an animated GIF that plays anywhere an image can: chats, documents, emails and web pages. Everything happens in your browser, so the video is never uploaded, and there is no signup or watermark.
Choose the part
The video plays in the page with its own controls. Play or scrub to the moment you want and select Start at the current frame, or type the start in seconds, then set the length, up to 10 seconds. The page shows how many frames that makes before you start, and refuses settings that would need more memory than a phone has to spare. Select Make GIF and the GIF appears under the video, with its size, frame count and length.
Frame rate and size
| Setting | Choices | What it changes |
|---|---|---|
| Frames per second | 5, 10, 15, 20 | Smoothness; the file grows with every frame |
| Width | 240, 320, 480, 640 px | Detail; the height follows the video, and a small video is never enlarged |
| Quality | Best quality, Balanced, Smallest file | Colors and how small changes are stored |
Five seconds at 10 frames a second is 50 frames. Halving the width leaves about a quarter of the pixels, which shrinks the GIF far more than lowering the quality. Balanced uses 128 colors and ignores tiny flickers between frames; Smallest file uses 64 colors; Best quality keeps up to 256. Each frame stores only what changed from the one before, so a clip with a still background, such as a screen recording, stays small.
Which videos work
MP4 and WebM play in every current browser. MOV is Apple's QuickTime format; it isn't an official web format, but MOV files with H.264 video usually open, and iPhone videos recorded in HEVC open in Safari. If a video won't open, the page says so instead of making a broken GIF. GIFs have no sound, so the audio is left out.
To make a GIF from a WebM recording or a clip saved from the web, see WebM to GIF. To make one from still pictures instead, use the GIF maker, and to cut the background out of a video, the video background remover.
Frequently asked questions
How long can the GIF be?
Up to 10 seconds at a time, from any point in the video. At large sizes and high frame rates the limit is lower, so a phone doesn't run out of memory; the page tells you before you start.
Why is the GIF bigger than the video?
GIF is an old image format: it stores up to 256 colors and compresses far less than modern video. Fewer frames a second, a smaller width or Smallest file shrink it a lot; the GIF compressor can squeeze an existing GIF further.
Does the GIF keep the sound?
No. GIFs are pictures only, so the sound is left out.
Can I convert a MOV from my iPhone?
Often, yes. iPhones set to High Efficiency record video in HEVC (H.265), which some browsers can't play; Safari on an iPhone or Mac can. Setting the camera to Most Compatible records H.264 instead, which plays everywhere.
Is my video uploaded?
No. The frames are read and the GIF is made inside your browser tab, so the video never leaves your device. There is no signup or watermark.
Which frame rate should I choose?
10 frames a second suits most clips and keeps the file small. 15 or 20 look smoother for fast movement but make a bigger GIF. GIF stores frame times in hundredths of a second, so 15 frames a second plays at about 14.3.
